General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin began his military career as far back as 1973 as a boy in Nigerian Military School Zaria. He was later admitted into the Nigerian Defence Academy for officer cadet training as a member of 25 Regular Combatant Course. General Olonisakin was commissioned in 1981 and posted to the Nigeria Army Signal Corps. 

General Olonisakin has attended several military courses. These include Young Officer Corps, Signal’s Squadron Commanders Course, Communication Management Course and Regimental Commanders Course. Others include Junior Staff Course, Senior Staff Course and National War College (now National Defence College). Gen Abayomi Olonisakin has attended various seminars at home and abroad. Some of them include World Cyber Security Summit in Los Angeles USA, Electronic Warfare Equipment Demonstration Califonia USA, technical visits to National Radio and Telecommunication Company, Pakistan.

The seasoned Signaler, General Olonisakin has participated in various operations both at home and abroad and has several honours and awards to his credit. Notable among the operations he participated in is United Nations Angola Verification Mission (UNAVEM III). Gen Olonisakin has been awarded Nigeria Army Medal (NAM), Forces Service Star (FSS), Meritorious Service Star (MSS), Grand Service Star (GSS), Command Medal, Research Medal, Silver and Golden Jubilee Medals. Having Commanded the Nigerian Army Corps of Signals, he has Corps Medal of Honour (CMH). Having being a Directing Staff at Armed Forces Command and Staff College, he has Pass Staff College Dagger and he is a Fellow of the Prestigious National Defence College. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree with honours in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

In the course of his illustrious career, he has held various staff and command appointments. Some of them include, Directing Staff Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Director Nigerian Army System Development Centre Lagos, Commander 51 Division Signals Kaduna and 59 Division signal Lagos. He was also a Commandant of Nigeria Army School of signals and a Principal General Staff Officer in Ministry of Defence Abuja. He was also the Commander Corps of Signals, a position he held until his appointment as Commander Training and Doctrine Command, TRADOC.

Gen Olonisakin is happily married with children. He loves reading and playing Badminton.
