ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) is organizing a one-day Gender Mainstreaming Conference on 9 November 2023 at the National Defence College, Abuja. The theme of the conference is “Building Capacity Through Gender Mainstreaming to Meet Security Challenges“. The Conference is being organized against the backdrop of the significant success recorded in gender mainstreaming following the domestication of the United Nation’s Security Council Resolution 1325 in Nigeria. The result, among others, has led to the admission of female combatants into the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna; the establishment of the Nigerian Army Women Corps and the promulgation of the Gender Policy of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).
It is also in keeping with the Chief of Defence Staff leadership concept of nurturing a professional AFN that is both people centric and capable of meeting its constitutional mandate in a joint environment. Accordingly, the objectives of the Gender Mainstreaming Conference are as follows:
• Deepen understanding of gender policy of AFN and its impact on professionalism.
• Build personnel capacity through acquisition of ICT skills.
• Strengthen inclusive service delivery among AFN personnel.
• Launch the maiden edition of DHQ Gender Magazine.
• Provide a platform for young Nigerians /solution providers to showcase their innovations.
• Avail Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA) platform to exhibit products from their respective skills acquisition centres.
In this regard the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, would be the Special Guest of Honour at the Conference. The Conference will also be attended by Members of the National Assembly, Ministers, Service Chiefs, Gender experts/advocates, industry leaders in digital economy, science/technology including international and local partners in gender issues among others.
