General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin was born on 2 December 1961 in Kaduna. He hails from Gboyin Local Government Area of Ekiti State. He began his military career in 1973 as a boy soldier in Nigerian Military School Zaria. He was admitted into the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of 25 Regular Combatant Course on 3 January 1979. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army Signals Corps on 18 December 1981. Gen Olonisakin holds BSc Electronic Engineering and a Diploma in Electronic and Telecoms Engineering both from Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife.
Gen Olonisakin attended several military courses including the Young Officers Signals Course, Young Officers Infantry Course, Squadron Commanders Course, Communication Management Course, Commanding Officers Infantry Course, Regimental Commanders Course, Junior Staff Course, Senior Staff Course, and the National Defence College. The Senior Officer has attended numerous seminars and conferences, notable among which are: World Cyber Security Summit in Los Angeles – USA, Electronic Warfare Equipment Demonstration California – USA, Surveillance Technology Seminar Las Vegas-USA, Middle East Special Operations Commanders Conference, Amman Jordan and the Defence Summer University Round Table – France. Gen Olonisakin held several Command, Staff and Instruction appointments among which are Grade II Staff Officer Operations/Training (G2 Ops/Trg), Nigerian Army School of Signals, Colonel Administration Headquarters Nigerian Army Signals, Military Assistant to Commandant Armed Forces Command and Staff College as well as Instructor, Nigerian Army School of Signals and the Directing Staff, Armed Forces Command and Staff College. Gen Olonisakin also served as Aid- de- Camp to former Governor of Lagos/Ogun State as well as the Principal General Staff Officer to a former Minister of Defence Abuja. He was one time the Director Nigerian Army System Development Centre Lagos, Director Department of Automated Data Processing, Commander 51 Division Signals Kaduna, Commander 59 Division Signals Lagos, Commandant Nigerian Army School of Signals, Commander Signals Corps as well as Commander Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). He was appointed Chief of Defence Staff, Defence Headquarters on 15 July 2015. His decorations include FSS, MSS,GSS, NARM, GJM, CMH, psc(+), fwc, NAM, Distinguished Service Order (DSO) of the Armed Forces of Liberia. He participated in the United Nations Angola Verification Mission (UNAVEM III) where the then Force Commander recognized him as a gentleman officer with sterling leadership qualities. Gen Olonisakin is happily married and blessed with children. He hobbies include reading and playing Badminton.
