General Martin Luther Agwai was born on Novermber 8, 1948 in Kaduna. He started his cadet training on 5 April 1970 and was commissioned on 9 September 1972. During his career, he attended the Gunnery Instructors Course, Nigerian Command and Staff College, British Army Staff College, Camberley, Special Staff Intelligence Course and the United States Army Armour School. He holds a Post Graduate diploma in Public Administration from the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria and a Master’s Degree in National Resource Strategy from the National Defence University Washington DC.
He was the Nigerian Military Adviser at Harare between 1993-1996 and was also the Chief Instructor at the Command and Staff College, Jaji. He was the Director of Military Training at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Chief of Training and Operations, Nigerian Army and the Deputy Military Adviser at the United Nations Headquarters, New York. He was appointed Chief of Army Staff and later Chief of Defence Staff on 1 June 2006. General Agwai later became the Commander of the Combined United Nations-African Union Peacekeeping Force in Darfur. General Martin Luther Agwai retired from the Nigerian Armed Forces in December 2009. He enjoys hiking and photography.
