General Owoye Andrew Azazi was born in Peretorugbene in Bayelsa State. He started his cadet training on 12 July 1972 and was commissioned on 14 December 1974. He attended the Staff Intelligence and Security Course at the School of Service Intelligence, Kent, UK, the Combined Strategic Intelligence Training Programme, Defence Intelligence College, Washington DC and the Command and Staff College Nigeria. He also attended the National War College, Nigeria and holds Masters Degree in Strategic Studies from the University of Ibadan.
He was a Brigade and Divisional Intelligence Officer as well as an Assistant Defence Attache at the Nigeran Embassy, Washington DC. He was appointed Colonel Coordination and Colonel Research and Development at the Directorate of Military Intelligence and the Training and Doctrine Command respectively. He also held the office of the Director of Military Intelligence, General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Chief of Army Staff and was appointed Chief of Defence Staff on 11 June 2007. General Azazi retired from service on 28 August 2008 and was appointed the National Security Adviser to the President on 4 October 2010. He plays squash and enjoys reading biographies.
