General Sani Abacha was born on 20 September 1943 in Nassarawa, Kano State. He attended the Nigerian Military School, Zaria and Mons Officer Cadet School, Aldershot, UK before being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 19 November 1963 During his career he attended the Company Commander’s Course, UK, Command and Staff College Course, Senior Executive Course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies and The Defence Management Course, USA.
He was the General Officer Commanding 2 Mechanized Division, The Chief of Army Staff and Chairman Joint Chief of Staff. He was appointed Chief of Defence Staff on 20 December 1989 and was later made the Minister of Defence in 1990. He went on to be become the Head of State and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces in 1994. General S Abacha died on active service on 8 June 1998. He was a keen squash and lawn tennis player.
