Lt Gen A Akinrinade was born on 3 October 1939 at Yakoyo in Ile-Ife, Osun State. He began his military training at the Royal Nigeria Military Force Training College, Kaduna in April 1960, then proceeded to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom in August 1960. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Infantry Corps on 20 December 1962.

He was promoted Lieutenant on 29 March 1963, Captain on 29 March 1965, Major on 10 June 1967, Lt Colonel on 11 May 1968, Colonel on 1 October 1972, Brigadier General on 1 October 1974, Major General on 1 January 1976 and Lt General on 2 October 1979. He was appointed Chief of Army Staff and later Chief of Defence Staff on 15 April 1980.

Lt Gen Akinrinade attended the Infantry Officer Career and Airborne Courses in the USA from August 1965 – July 1966. He also attended the Military Staff College, Camberley from January – December 1971 and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom from January – December 1978.
He was the Commander of the Ibadan Garrison from 1970-1971, the General Officer Commanding 1 Infantry Division from 1975-1979 and was also a member of the Supreme Military Council from 1975-1979.
He retired voluntarily from service on October 1981. He enjoys sporting activities as well as farming.
