General Donaldson Oladipo Diya was born on 3 April 1944 at Odogbolu, Ogun State. He started his cadet training in 14 March 1964 and was commissioned on 19 March 1967. He attended the US Army School of Infantry, the Command and Staff College, Jaji from 1980-1981 and the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru. He also obtained a Law Degree from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and was called to the Nigeian Bar as Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
General Diya Commanded 31 Airborne Brigade, 3 Armoured Division and was appointed Military Governor of Ogun State from January 1984 to August 1985. He was also General Officer Commanding 82 Division in 1985, Commandant, Nigerian Army School of Infantry and Commandant, National War College from 1991-1993. He was later appointed Chief of Defence Staff on 17 Sep 1993. After his tenure as the CDS, he was appointed the Chief of General Staff in 1993 and Vice Chairman of the Provisional Ruling Council in 1994.
