Lt Gen GS Jallo was born on 1 March 1939 at Numan, Adamawa State. He enlisted into the Infantry corps of the Royal Nigerian Military Force in 1959. He later attended the Regular Officers Cadet Training course at the Royal West African Frontier Force Training School, Teshi in Ghana and subsequently the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, UK. He was commissioned as Second Lieutenant on 4 November 1960. He was promoted Lieutenant on 7 April 1962, Captain on 20 September 1964, Major on 10 June 1967, Lt Colonel on 11 May 1968, Colonel on 1 April 1970, Brigadier General on 1 October 1973, Major General on 1 January 1976 and Lt General on 15 April 1980. 

He attended the Platoon Commander Tactics Course at the Nigerian Military Training College, the Joint Services Staff Course at Latner, United Kingdom, and the National Defence College, India. During his career he was the Deputy Commandant and later Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy. He was also the General Officer Commanding 3 Infantry Division, Deputy Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Army Staff and was appointed Chief of Defence Staff on 2 Oct 1981. General Jallo was an active and keen sportsman. He died on 10 January 2000.
